Food sources drive temporal variation in elemental stoichiometry of benthic consumers

چکیده

Benthic fauna plays an important role in mediating biogeochemical cycles coastal areas by storing carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) their body tissues at theoretically homeostatic rates. To maintain homeostasis, the benthic consumers need to be balance with resource supply or alter stoichiometric traits response environmental change. However, we lack understanding regarding potential variation C : N P content ratios of consumers, especially marine where shifts macrofauna could have strong effects on sediment nutrient cycling. By monitoring two sites over a year, quantified magnitude temporal stability faunal pools soft-sediment habitats. Our results show that is not strictly homeostatic, but instead expresses content. These aquatic undergo ontogenetic changes diet morphology, which characteristics. In addition, showed seasonal both species community level, our suggest shift food sources conditions. The ability adapt varying conditions essential face growing imbalance occurring ecosystems as consequence anthropogenic activities. Therefore, it critically identify plasticity different species, before change causes composition will functions ecosystem level.

Evolutionary inheritance of elemental stoichiometry in phytoplankton.

The elemental composition of phytoplankton is a fusion of the evolutionary history of the host and plastid, resulting in differences in genetic constraints and selection pressures associated with environmental conditions. The evolutionary inheritance hypothesis predicts similarities in elemental composition within related taxonomic lineages of phytoplankton. To test this hypothesis, we measured...

Comparative elemental stoichiometry of ecologically diverse Drosophila

1. Chemical analyses of ecologically diverse species of Drosophila reveal substantial variation among them in their nitrogen and phosphorus contents, determined as a percentage of adult dry mass. Across Drosophila species, the nitrogen content of flies is positively correlated with phosphorus content. 2. For both N and P, the concentration in the flies is correlated with that of their breeding ...

Does stoichiometry drive protein folding?

Proteins are synthesized in the cell as sequential strings of amino acids. However, ribosome-emerging polypeptide chains are not active and they have to fold into a usually unique three-dimensional (3D) structure to become functional. Many proteins have been shown to attain spontaneously in vitro their native state from an initially complex ensemble of unfolded conformations in the absence of t...

Elemental stoichiometry and compositions of weevil larvae and two acorn hosts under natural phosphorus variation

To understand how different trophic organisms in a parasite food chain adapt to the differences in soil nutrient conditions, we investigated stoichiometric variation and homeostasis of multiple elements in two acorn trees, Quercus variabilis and Quercus acutissima, and their parasite weevil larvae (Curculio davidi Fairmaire) at phosphorus (P)-deficient and P-rich sites in subtropical China wher...

Stable isotopes in subtidal food webs: Have enriched carbon ratios in benthic consumers been misinterpreted?

We examined the hypothesis that the d13C of benthic consumers is depleted in offshore, deeper waters where kelp and benthic microalgae are absent by conducting three analyses: (1) we analyzed d13C (and d15N) of consumers along a nearshore–offshore gradient in the field, (2) we analyzed d13C (and d15N) of consumers placed in cages at various depths and distances from shore, and (3) we reexamined...
